We are now in the final boarding stages of flight SHC2374, destination Good Toimes (a suburb of Songjiang)!

The player draft by Captains will be on September 11th and to work this into the exciting event that it is we will be hosting the Season Opening Party on the same day at Malone's so you can hear first hand from your new Captain which team you will be on this year in the long and arduous battle to upset the defending champion Sacremento Fog Devils (or if a Fog Devil the long and arduous battle to complete the season without liver damage).

What: SHC Season Opening Partay w/ Draft Results Announcement
Where: 3rd Floor of Malone's on Tongren Lu
When: 7pm until someone falls on you or you fall on someone
How Much: 150RMB at the door gets you a buffet dinner, some "ref juice" and a few unavoidable Jager shots

• Replay of 1st Round Draft Picks from earlier in the day
• Roll Call by each Captain of their full roster
• Grand unveiling of new team names and logos
• Boat Races
• Lucky Draw
• Strategic discussion of how to unseat the Fag Fog Devils in 2010-11
• Play the "Where's my equipment?" Game

• Pre-draft league fee for the FULL season is 1600RMB which includes 20 action packed games (1 hour each), playoffs (congratulations, you have qualified already!) and the odd Jager shot every now and then
• Payment dates and locations
  • September 2nd - Shinny at Bailian Xijiao Shopping Centre in Hongqiao
  • September 3rd - First Evaluation Skate at Bailian Xijiao Shopping Centre in Hongqiao
  • September 6th - Malone’s 7:30 to 9:30pm (we will be on the second floor beside the bar)
  • September 7th - Malone’s 7:30 to 9:30pm
  • September 8th - Malone’s 7:30 to 9:30pm
  • September 8th – Second Evaluation Skate at Bailian Xijiao Shopping Centre in Hongqiao
  • September 9th - Malone’s 7:30 to 9:30pm
  • September 10th - Malone’s 7:30 to 9:30pm
• If you are not able to get payment in by September 10th you cannot play in the first half of the season and will have to wait till the mid-season draft in early January 2011 to join the league. Shinny is always available to you while you wait!
• Draft Day is September 11th, draft is a “closed draft” (execs and captains only)
• Jersey fee is 400RMB (payable when you receive the jersey) and is required if you are drafted to a team whose jersey you don’t currently have
• Goalies play for free
• League waiver form must be signed at time of payment to be able to play

Looking for a bit more fun and excitement than the Bailian Xijiao Shopping Centre Ice Palace can offer?  We have two Red Guard match-ups coming up quickly in September and are looking to put together some teams if anybody is interested:

Australian Old Timer's Tour (yeah, they play hockey in Oz)
When: September 13th and 15th
Where: Songjiang Uni Ice Rink
How Much: 100-150RMB/pp depends on how many guys we get
How Long: 1.5 hours each night
Who: Are you 40+ or having any artificial limbs?  This event is for you! Priority will be given to players from oldest to youngest. Here is a self description from the Aussies:
  "We have three lines and a goalie coming. The average age is 60 years old. Of the three lines, the first one is OK and would be middle of the pack at the Bangkok Oct tournament. The third line is pretty slow and has more artificial body parts than a Transformers movie. The second line is mid way between."
What: Good toimes!

Hu Xu's Beijing All-Star Team
When: September 20th and 21st
Where: Songjiang Uni Ice Rink
How Much: 100-150RMB/pp depends on how many guys we get, ideally 2-3 lines for this one
How Long: 2 hours each night
Who: The best we got.  This team is on par with the Harbin Police Force Team who likes to run drills and often beats us by 10 goals without trying.  This would be some fairly fast hockey.
What: Strenuous exercise

Back by popular demand after a real "barn burner" at the 1st Bi-Annual SHC Shanghai Golf Tournament, SHC's own former PGA pro Tim "Fore" Gardner is now accepting players for a fall golf extravaganza to coincide with the hockey season kickoff. We are looking for 8 teams this time with priority given to members of the SHC so here is the dillio:

What: 2nd Bi-Annual SHC Shanghai Scramble Golf Tourney
Where: Hongqiao Golf Course
When: October 16, early
Cost: 700RMB for the golf, on course brewskies are extra
What: 8 teams will start the day with some tips on proper course etiquette (and how to properly conceal your hip flask from course monitors) courtesy of SHC resident golf pro Jake "Jersey Shore" Malloy before venturing out to a "staggered" start under the Gardner Mazur Crilly scoring system. This is an 18 hole tourney and follows a "scramble" format of play (similar to the scramble seen on adjacent holes when Hampus "Long Ball" Hubinette mishandles a tee shot). Awards will be given for various achievements throughout the day and post match refreshments are being arranged in the vicinity.

Teams will fill up fast so please put your name in with Tim Gardner at gardnetb@westinghouse.com if you would like to join the fun. All skill levels welcome!

It’s that time of year again, time to reach under your mattress to pull out that thick wad of Chairman Mao notes (the red ones) that you have been saving all summer for your SHC hockey league dues and hand them over to us for your passport to hockey “good toimes”!  That’s right, the 2010-2011 SHC Season is about to start and you are all invited to put your name in for the draft, make some new friends, make friends of your enemies and get healthy in the process! (minus the odd Jager shot...)

This year we will be doing things a bit different on league fees payment, we will be collecting payment BEFORE the draft for a few reasons:

• To ensure that everyone drafted is committed to playing the whole season
• To eliminate the confusion of payment collection at the season opening party
• To avoid chasing late payers for money a few games into the season
• To reduce the chance of people changing their mind on playing if they get drafted to a team with someone they can’t get along with and leaving that captain short one man
• To enable the league the financial ability to get jerseys started earlier and on your backs earlier

So without further adieu here is the info you need to know to play:

FAQs

• “What if I get drafted to the same team as Jake Malloy and hate playing with him because he’s a puck hog and is always making lewd jokes about my mother on the bench?”  Suck it up and learn to get along with your brother man, you can’t switch teams and there are no refunds for this reason.
• “What if _ months/days/weeks after the draft my boss tells me, “You’ve been assigned to the Yellowknife office starting next Monday morning”, will I get any refund on my league fees?”  This will be dealt with on a case by case basis, bring your case to an exec and we can discuss.
• “I am out of town for the next 3 weeks, how can I get my money in before the draft?”  Ask a friend to pay on your behalf, if you really want to play we are confident you can figure it out.
• “What if I don’t arrive in Shanghai until Oct/Nov/Dec/Jan, can I still play?”  You can play shinny until January 2011 and then we have a mid season draft to add more players for the second half of the season at a discounted rate.

This year we would like to focus on three key themes:

• Good times! - first and foremost this league and club is about having fun, both on and off the ice
• Safety – hockey is more fun if nobody gets hurt, please respect the safety of others on the ice at all times, nobody is heading to the NHL from the SHC
• Community – fun is more fun if you have more people to have fun with
