Coming to ShanghaiHi all, I am originally from Hong Kong but I will be in Shanghai come September for a year learning Mandarin at Fudan university. I just have a couple of questions about playing hockey while I am there. Can anyone tell me if the rink is close to Fudan university? What are the taxi rates like? What is the standard of play like? I played in the British Universities Ice Hockey Association for the last 3 years which held a range of player abilities from intermediate to advanced. I am looking for something more or less similar. Do you play full contact? Who should I speak to once I get there? Sorry if the information is already on the site here, but it seems that after 4 years of uni I still haven't managed to lose the laziness... |

laziness fits right in with
laziness fits right in with most of the guys on this team, unless it has something to do with ordering shots of jager after we play.
The rink really isn't that close to Fudan, but then its not really close to anything. What I would recommend is try and find some other students who play and car pool at taxi with them. I'd expect it to be between 25-35 rmb one way.
When you say british hockey association, the canadian in me cringes. were most of the guys you played with british or were there players from more traditional hockey countries? might have an effect on what you consider to be advanced hockey ;-)
We've got a whole range of abilities though, so you're more than welcome to come out and join us. Give me a call or email when you get to town and I'll give you more details. If you do that though, I promise I'll lay you out flat on your back your first shift out on the ice in Shanghai. If you want to avoid that punishment, stop being so lazy and take five minutes to read some of the info on this website.
Hey, cheers for the quick
Hey, cheers for the quick reply.
The league I played in the UK had a mixture of students from all around the world, but yeah the majority of players resided there.
Heh sorry, I wasn't too clear on what I meant with the intermediate and advanced hockey. I suppose if I compare it with a Canadian perspective then the league would only have a few pretty good players and a lot of crappy ones.
Ha don't expect anything good from me, as I was one of the crappy ones! I can skate but I don't have good balance, my stickhandling is just plain rubbish and my shot is prob my best feature but it ain't that impressive. I struggled in that league but I had no option to join a lesser skilled one.
Thanks a lot for the help man, I'll be sure to call ya when I arrive. Btw, what is your name and number? Or was that a test to see if I would check it out on this site? Heh.. mine is Cameron.

Just kidding around with you, Cameron. come on out and enjoy a few beers with the boys. Hockey comes second to that on most nights anyways. Regarding skill level, I have no doubt you'll be able to skate circles around Corey there and we still let him play. ;-)
Call me when you get in. Name is Greg and my number is 136 7197 4511.
Cheers
