Playoff Rules for Nanjing 2007 - 2008

Rule 1.

Only players having played a minimum of one third of the regular season games are allowed to play in the playoffs.
(Substitutions will not be allowed in the event some players are unable to attend.)

**  minimum games played not enforced for 2007 – 2008 season  **

Rule 2.

Playoff format shall be decided by the Board of Directors (with consultation with team captains), based on the amount of teams participating.

** (For 2007-2008 the format will be a round robin with 2 Pools.Pool A: 1st, 4th, and 6th.  Pool B: 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. **

Rule 3.

For the duration of the playoffs, in the event the goal difference between both teams is equal or less than 2 goals, then the last 2 minutes of the last period of regulation time will be stop time.  If during this period, the score changes again and the goal difference becomes greater than 2 goals, the game will resume with running time.

Rule 4.

The ranking of the teams for playoffs seeding will be based on points total for the regular season. In the event 2 or more teams are tied, the following tie-breaking rules shall apply:
In the same manner, the ranking of teams at the end of the round robin will be based on points total for the round robin. In the event 2 or more teams are tied, the following tie-breaking rules shall apply:

** As these tie-breaking rules will apply for both the regular season, and playoffs, then the term “Period” will be used to represent both regular season, and playoffs **

  1. The team with the most wins during this “Period” shall be declared higher in the standings.
  2. If two or more teams are still tied, the team with the best record in head-to-head competition shall be declared higher in the standings. If more than two teams are tied after the first tie-breaker, the percentage of available points earned in games among each other shall be used to determine the standing.
  3. If teams are still tied, the team with the greater differential between goals scored for and against by clubs having equal standing after the second tie-breaker shall be declared higher in the standings.
  4. If teams are still tied, the team with lowest amount of penalty minutes in total “Period” games will be declared higher in the standings.
  5. If teams are still tied, the team with the highest amount of goals scored will be ranked higher.
  6. If teams are still tied, the teams will finally be ranked by random pick of a team from a hat.

Rule 5.

If a game is tied at the end of regular play:

  1. 2 four-minute running-time overtime periods will be played .
  2. For the first period, goalies will defend for the same team they defended for, in the last period of regulation time. The same goalies will change teams for the second overtime period. These are not “sudden-death” overtime periods.  At the end of the 2 overtime periods, the team with the highest amount of goals wins.

  3. If the teams are still tied at the end of the overtime, then a penalty shootout shall decide the outcome.
    1. Each team will select their defending goalie. The selected goalie must have played in this specific game.  The same goalie can defend for both teams.
    2. In the shootout round, a team shall first select amongst its ranks the 3 players they want to use as shooters for the first round.
    3. A coin toss will be used to decide which team shall shoot first.  The team winning the toss will have the option to decide if they want to shoot first, or allow the opposing team to procede.
    4. Players from each team will alternate.
    5. The team with the most goals at the end of this round wins.
    6. If teams are still tied at the end of the first round of the penalty shootout, then each team shall select one “new” player and shoot once more, in the same order as in the first round of the shootout, until a winner gets decided.
    7. Every player from a team must have participated in the shootout at least once before a player from the same team can procede a second time.  (Even if the number of players per team is not equal.)
    8. Players still serving a penalty at the end of the 2nd overtime period will be allowed to shoot.

Rule 6.

An accumulation of 10 penalty minutes during the playoffs by an individual player will result in a one game suspension, and a review of the penalties by the SHC Board of Directors for the possibility of further suspension.

Rule 7.

Verbal or physical abuse of an official by a player or coach WILL NOT BE TOLERATED and is a minimum one game suspension. Discretion to allot further suspensions rests with the SHC Board of Directors.
